The old saying ‘prevention is better than cure’ couldn’t be more true when it comes to sunburn. We all know how to avoid it: SPF 30+, staying out of the sun between noon and 3pm, wearing a hat and sitting in the shade. But summer is here and sometimes accidents happen. And, by ‘accidents’, we fully mean falling asleep on your sun lounger without a hat from 12pm-3pm. Oops.
So how do you undo – or at least try to repair – the damage to your skin? Here are a few of our best remedies.
Sunburn doesn’t just dry out your skin; it dehydrates your whole body. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water – minimum two litres per day – to help your cells repair themselves from the inside out.
Take a shower
A cool – not icy cold – shower will help stop your skin from feeling so hot and make you more comfortable. Equally a lukewarm bath with a little lavender oil will sooth sore skin and take away any itching.
Aloe, aloe, aloe
A natural anti-inflammatory, aloe vera is one of the best ways to soothe your sunburn, as it will also cool down your skin. Keep a tube on hand and slather it all over yourself every night until your burn heals.
Cover any blistering
While blisters only tend to occur in the most severe sunburn cases, it’s a good idea to cover them after showering and applying aloe gel. Use gauze and bandage tape, and change regularly, until the blisters are fully healed. You may also want to consult your doctor for further care or if you have any additional symptoms of severe sunburn, like a headache, dizziness, sore stomach or chills.
Vitamin E is your friend
The antioxidant properties of Vitamin E make it an ideal sunburn healer, so make sure you stock up on a whole load of Vitamin E goodies, including a moisture-rich sleep mask that will help fix your rouge face while you snooze.
Just keep moisturising
Seriously. Slather on that lotion, wait for it to soak in and repeat. We love anything packed with aloe as it helps to fix dryness, itching, flaking and all the other joys sunburn brings.
