Why Stoneman Douglas student Cameron Kasky is our hero, period

There’s no way you haven’t heard about the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Occurring earlier this year, 17 people were shot dead and 17 more were wounded, in one of the world’s deadliest school shootings. However, rather than let this senseless act of violence destroy them, the Stoneman Douglas students have been using their voices to rally for gun control – and are even tackling period poverty in the process.

Since the shooting, pupils have been forced to replace their regular backpacks with clear versions, so their possessions – and any weapons – are completely visible on entering school. While this violation of privacy is clearly upsetting, Cameron Kasky has found a way to use his transparent bag for the greater good, by filling it with tampons.

Offering an explanation on Twitter, Cameron said, “To those with questions about my tampon backpack – I only got lights. I didn’t know. Getting supers for tomorrow. Sizes, pricing… I’m learning new things about women’s health right now. This stuff is expensive. Steps must be taken to make these health products easier to access.” Right on!

Fellow student Sarah Stricker got behind her friend, tweeting, “Yes Cameron if only I had the confidence to do that”. Cameron replied, “Here for you if you need anything… tampons and beyond”.

What. A. Hero.
