*sings* Ooga-chacka ooga-chacka ooga-chacka ooga-chacka AAAAAAAAAAAA, hooked on a feeling….
If you started singing along with me there, either your parents are playing you a lot of music from 60s bands with terrible hair or you were as big a fan of 2014’s surprise hit Guardians of the Galaxy as the rest of us. What everyone expected to be too out-there and nerdy for all but the most dedicated comic book fans ended up being a hilarious, heartwarming film that had us all weeping into our sleeves and finally recognising Kevin Bacon as the hero he really is. And now there’s another one out!
Let’s back it up a bit. Guardians of the Galaxy is the story of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), an earth boy who was kidnapped by a bunch of space pirates and grew up to be a joke-cracking, spaceship-flying, lady alien-seducing guy who dubs himself ‘Star Lord’. He gets arrested and thrown in jail with the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), alien Drax (Dave Bautista), and the bounty-hunting duo of humanoid tree Groot (Vin Diesel) and genetically engineered racoon Rocket (Bradley Cooper). They break out of jail to try and make a lot of money together but end up stopping Gamora’s adoptive father and sister (Lee Pace and Karen Gillan) from destroying the universe.
Like I said, it sounds ridiculous and too nerdy to be true, but even your imaginary big sister Mindy Kaling came out of the cinema 100% in love with CGI raccoon
Update: I now think a raccoon is hot

The films are so popular that the third one was announced before the second one was even released, and I dare you to watch this clip of dancing Baby Groot without smiling
Yeah. Can’t do it, can you?
So what’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 about? Well, at the end of the first film Peter Quill discovered that he was actually only half human, and it looks like a big part of this film is going to be about him discovering who his father is. There’s also a lot of saving the universe again, a comic book film with a whole three lead female characters (suck on that, DC), a lot of sarcasm and black humour, a CGI baby tree running around being adorable, and the best soundtrack since that Spotify playlist you and your mates made to get ready to. It’s going to be amazing.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in cinemas now.
