What to watch this weekend: You’ve Got Mail

We’ll be straight with you from the off: this movie was made in 1998. But while some people would say it’s old, we’d use words like ‘classic’ and ‘timeless’ – it’s the A-line dress of films. If you can look past the haircuts and the dial up sound whenever they use the internet, this movie will melt your heart.

Important info: it’s written by Nora Ephron, the late rom-com genius behind other classics like When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. Wherever there’s a funny lady you love (Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, Rachel Bloom) you can bet they were inspired by Nora.

The basic gist is Joe (Tom Hanks) and Kathleen (Meg Ryan) meet in a chatroom and start an online romance via email. Although they’ve never met face-to-face they develop feelings for each other, but little do they know that IRL they’re actually business rivals in the bookshop game.

Basically, if the film was set today, she’d be called Hannah and he’d be called Charlie, they’d have met on Tinder, and they’d work for rival social media content agencies. But this was the 90s – it was a different time. But if others 90s staples like chokers and mom jeans can make a comeback, then surely so can the rom-coms?

You’ve Got Mail is on tonight on 5 Star.
