Throw some shade! Here are the hats we’ll all be wearing this summer

The sun has got its hat on, and so do we! But which of summer 2017’s biggest headwear trends will you be packing*? Here are your options.

*‘All of them’ is a totally valid answer.

The baseball cap

Push all thoughts of your Grandparents’ golfing trips to the back of your head, because the cap is back and it’s cooler than ever. Go for retro sports vibes, washed-out pastels and statement embroidery to sidestep the primary school sports-day associations.

Also has the added bonus of making you feel like a celeb hiding from the paparazzi every time you go out without washing your hair.

Grey Adidas Originals cap, £15, ASOS

Daisy embroidered cap, £16, Topshop

Black bow cap, £9.99, New Look

Embroidered cap, £8, Monki

The floppy brimmed hat with a word round the brim

You know the ones! Every Instagram star has one, so you should too. Just choose your favourite slogan, snap your dreamy holiday flat-lay, and if you want to be really radical, actually put it on your head.

’Chase the Sun’ straw hat, £18, ASOS

‘On Vacay’ straw fedora, £22, River Island

‘Sun, Sea, Slay’ hat, £12.99, New Look

Catch Some Rays’ straw hat, £17, Joanie

‘Here Comes The Sun’ straw hat, £6, George at Asda

The tied-up scarf

Look, we can’t all be hat people. If brims and peaks aren’t your thing, unleash your inner 70s poolside glamazon instead with a tied-up head scarf or knotted statement turban. Just add giant earrings, mirrored sunglasses and a seriously impractical swimsuit.

Black pleated knot-front hat, £10, ASOS

Scarf hairband, £6.99, H&M

Leopard print turban, £14, TopshopPrinted scarf, £8, Monki

The straw fedora

What’s the difference between a trilby and a fedora? We’re glad you asked! The official difference is that a fedora has a wider brim; the actual difference is that ‘fedoras’ are hot right now, so that’s what we’re calling all the hats. Ok? Keep things classic with a simple straw number, or go fully 2017 with a pom-pom trim.

Pom-pom straw fedora, £20, River Island

Straw fedora, £15.99, Mango

Patterned straw fedora, £16, Topshop

The 90s bucket hat

Your parents are going to find this one hilarious, but ignore them because the bucket hat is still as strong a look now as it was on Liam Gallagher in 1994. Bonus points if you can find an original vintage Kangol hat, but if not these buckets will do nicely. Spade not included.

Yellow washed bucket hat, £6, Urban Outfitters

Rose bucket hat, £22, ASOS

Adidas Originals bucket hat, £18, Topshop

Printed floral bucket hat, £10, Trouva
