Grab your glitter, your sequins, your best continental snacks and your funniest mates and plop yourself in front of the TV this weekend. That’s right, the Eurovision final is on this Saturday night and by all accounts, it’s set to be as absurd as usual.

But as well as doing vocal warm-ups and assembling the cheese buffet, here’s everything else we’ve been reading, love and watching this week!

Judgement day for Harry Styles

Finally, after weeks of waiting, the full Harry Styles album has dropped. Harry has been everywhere in the last few weeks promoting it – he’s been wearing a pink suit on The Today Show in the States, he tried (and failed) to crowd surf in an underground bar in Brooklyn and who can forget his profile in Rolling Stone Magazine, which made everyone who read it weak at the knees? He’s also reportedly got a new lady love, Insta-celeb, chef and healthy food blogger Tess Ward, which has suddenly piqued our interest in salad.

We don’t know about you, but we’re gonna have this on repeat all. day. long.

Bang bang, there goes your heart

Nicki Minaj tweeted this week about a competition where she would pay international airfares for winners to spend time with her at the Billboard Music Awards, when one of her fans tweeted at her: “Well you wanna pay for my tuition?” AND GUYS, SHE DID! Not only that, she offered up cash to other fans too if they could prove that they had a 4.0 GPA (which apparently are really good grades – IDK, I’m not American).

She helped a grand total of THIRTY current and former students with their tuition, student loans or other education-related expenses before promising to do the same thing all over again in a couple of months. She really is about that super bass(line of equality), guys.

Simone Biles deserves a gold medal in sass

Our fave athlete from the 2016 Olympic games (sorry Team GB) is making headlines again, but not for her gymnastics this time. She’s currently competing on Dancing With the Stars (the US version of Strictly) and after the judges gave her feedback on her performance, the host, Tom Bergeron commented, “I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments… you didn’t.” To which our babe Simone shrugged and replied, “Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals.” Fierce af.

Brb, I’m starting a campaign to officially name the sassy girl emoji ‘Simone’ in her honour.

Tom Daley somersaults into marriage

Speaking of the Olympics, diving dreamboat Tom Daley married his boyfriend Dustin Black this week in the *most* beautiful ceremony…

So… what did you do this weekend?

A post shared by Dustin Lance Black (@dlanceblack) on

And then, as if they weren’t being adorable enough, Dustin posted a photo of himself crouching beside a small tree with the caption: “Married life: Plant trees to mark the beginning of our new adventures together? [tick] Paint the living room? [tick] Wipe that grin off my face? NO.” Congratulations you two!

Sims is back!

If Pokemon Go is lying abandoned on your iPhone, collecting (metaphorical) dust, fear not – we have the solution. Sims is coming to iPhones and Androids, “soon” which is an annoyingly unspecific timeline but we don’t care, we’re getting excited anyway.

PPL Recap

Guys, this episode was insane. Tbh, there hasn’t been nearly enough weirdness going on in the last few episodes for my liking, but woah. Woah. It was Ali’s turn to play End Game and A taunted her by sending her to a baby store and making her pick out things for it before revealing that the baby was actually made with EMILY’S EGG. GUYS! GUYS! I’m trying not to be smug and all like, I picked this – but I totally picked this. So now what happens to the baby? Ali cancelled her abortion and tbf, I’m not sure what the etiquette is when you find out you’ve been impregnated against your will with your bff/love interest’s baby. Emily and Paige sort of got back together, but let’s be real, that’s not gonna last once she finds out about the whole baby mumma situation. Spencer had a confrontation with her dad before going searching for Mary Drake with Hanna. And then we found out that Pastor Ted (I love Pastor Ted, he reminds me of a human teddy bear) is Charles/Charlotte’s dad, which let’s be honest, was a real curve ball. Aria and Ezra’s relationship is getting super weird and the whole thing with Nicole feels so twisted and wrong, especially since she found the book they wrote ABOUT HER. Then Aria started receiving anonymous phone calls from A.D. which were so freaking creepy, and agreed to meet A.D. in a stretch limo (obvs) but it was Sydney, who I’ll be honest, is still a confusing character to me – why is she involved in this? I don’t understand! But it looks like Aria might strike a deal with A.D. to get her out of playing End Game because Hanna’s up again and she is pissed. Will the game tear the Liars apart? Only five more sleeps until we can find out more!

Happy Friday!

International Women’s Day was this Wednesday (8th March). It’s the day where we celebrate our sisters, our gals, our squad. The day when we wear our best feminist t-shirts and post quotes from our favourite poets. It’s a day to take stock and see how far we’ve come – but it’s also a day when we think about how much work there is left to do. Issues like equal pay and justice for survivors of sexual assault, and thinking about women half a world away as well as women here at home… it’s a day to feel the love, but also get fired up to change the world.

Here are some of our favourite things from 2017’s International Women’s Day.

Day Without a Woman

Loads of companies in the States went on strike on Wednesday in solidarity with the Day Without A Woman movement. It was organised by the same women who pulled off the Women’s March that took place in January, where 5 million people protested worldwide the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration. A Day Without A Woman aimed to send a message about how much women are taken for granted in society – they’re paid less and expected to do more, both at work and at home. Netflix made a great clip to draw attention to the day.

#hervoiceismyvoice

Meanwhile, YouTube put together its own vid with the hashtag #hervoiceismyvoice. It took clips from some of the most incredible moments of the past year and all the amazing work that women have done (*cough* Viola Davis *cough*). It gave us all the feels and it made us freaking proud to be women.

The new sexy

Celebrities weren’t about to let this day go past without mentioning it. Emilia Clarke wrote an amazing piece for the Huffington Post and we’re a little in love. Choice extract: “I believe that it is every woman’s choice to be able to live her life how she sees fit… that all of us are girl-bosses and the power of the girl-boss is that we care a bit more about those around us.” You go girl. Read the whole article here.

Why we need to talk about periods…

Meghan Markle, an actress in the hit TV show Suits, also penned an article for Time Magazine about breaking the taboo around periods. In the developing world, periods often become a barrier for young women – they’re not allowed in classrooms when they’re menstruating, or even, sometimes, in their homes. Markle wants to change all that.

“When we empower girls hungry for education, we cultivate women who are emboldened to effect change within their communities and globally,” she wrote. And pftt, some people think the fact that she’s dating Prince Harry is the most interesting thing about her. Read the whole article here.

What women won’t tell you

Caitlin Moran took a different tack (obviously, she’s Caitlin Moran) with her piece for men’s magazine Esquire, which they republished this week. 12 Things Women Won’t Tell You About Being a Woman covered topics like periods, fear, wanking and carbs in her typically truth-bomb style. Kudos to Caitlin – because women helping women is a beautiful thing, but for big change we need to get men on board too.

Book fairies

Emma Watson was making magic again this week – only this time, she was leaving books near some of the iconic statues of famous women in NYC. There were other book fairies working their magic in London too, dropping some kickass books by some of our fave authors all over the city. Mischief managed.

You’ve got to Move It

Spring has FINALLY sprung, so you should too! Keep all the good vibes from this week going by heading down to MOVE IT 2017 this weekend. The weekend-long festival of dance at London’s Excel Centre features amazing dance classes and performances from incredible pro dancers, plus everything you need to bust a move. What better way to celebrate your body and everything it can do? Count us in. Literally.

Happy Friday, and remember: #neverthelessshepersisted

Welcome to Friday! Please put away your tray tables and return your seats to the upright position. The weekend is fast approaching and we could not be more ready for it.

We’re thinking baked eggs for brunch and some shopping for our bedrooms… but in the meantime, here’s everything we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

Big bang for their buck

The original five lead cast members of The Big Bang Theory are reportedly taking pay cuts so that co-stars Mayim Bialik (Amy) and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) can get raises. According to Variety, Bailik and Raunch are paid $200,000 an episode (nice), while the rest of the cast are paid  a cool $1 MILLION. Per episode. Whaaa. Anyway, the guys are all taking a voluntary $100,000 paycut so that their female co-stars can get a raise. Maths, science, history, discovering the mystery that all started with… a million bucks.

Trans-cending gender norms

This year at the New York Toy Fair, the Tonner Doll Company unveiled the first mainstream trans doll. The doll’s features are based on Jazz Jennings, a transgender teenager who has become a prominent LGBTQ advocate, as well as having a successful YouTube channel and a book. Why are toys so much better now than when we were kids?!

Lorde of the Scavenger Hunt

After releasing this cryptic clip on her website earlier in the week, Lorde sent her Kiwi fans on a musical scavenger hunt around the city. She shared a map on Twitter with three red pins and the caption: “Auckland: from 9:30pm TONIGHT, I’ve organised a few more little glimpses at what’s coming. if  you want to know more, consult the map.”

Obviously, people were massively intrigued. When they arrived at the locations there were neon green lights bring projected onto the beach, the sides of buildings and even out of cars, plus short clips of Lorde singing. Is Lorde saying what we think she’s saying? Is there finally a new album on the way? Or has she been an extraterrestrial lifeform all along? This is like an episode of Sherlock brought to life. For all those who’ve bene following along, her new track has dropped here!

YouTube is taking over your TV, kinda

Joy to the internet today, as YouTube have announced they’re launching YouTube TV. Basically, the site is trying to reboot live TV for a younger generation, so we’ll be able to get standard television channels from anywhere, plus unlimited storage to record so you never have to miss out on anything good. For the time being, it will only be available in the States, but watch this space. Literally.

Nintendo Switch is out today!

Games fans, brace yourselves. For those who are playing catch-ups, the Nintendo Switch is a new games console that you can take with you wherever you go AND you can play with friends. Zelda Breath of the Wild is the game we’re really holding our breath over, but rumour has it we’ll soon we’ll be able to play Mario Kart in an actual go-kart. Reports that there will also be real road made of rainbows are as yet unconfirmed, but we’re hopeful.

Rihanna is Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year

Rihanna was the living embodiment of the sassy hair flick emoji this week when she accepted her Humanitarian of the Year award at Harvard. She opened she speech by saying, “So, I made it to Harvard,’ and then literally flicked her hair. Whadda babe. Rihanna was given the award for building an oncology and nuclear medicine centre to diagnose and treat breast cancer in Barbados, and founding a nonprofit that supports students from Caribbean countries who are attending university in the US. The spirit of Elle Woods lives on.

Welcome to Friday (although who really keeps track of the days of the week during half term anyway?) We hope you’ve either had a relaxing week of holidays, hot chocolates and minimal homework… or a week of going ‘it’s half term next week!!!’ (then a hot chocolate and minimal homework).

Go on, kick your feet up and read about everything we’ve been doing, loving and reading this week.

Love Actually is actually returning

If your friends are anything like ours, you spent most of Wednesday evening sending the gif below from Love Actually to each other to celebrate the announcement that the Love Actually cast a reuniting for a short film for Red Nose Day. It will air on BBC One as part of Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day fundraiser – so there’s only 35 days to go. Now, whenever we get gloomy about the state of the world, we’ll think about… um, the Love Actually revival.

Our gal Grace Victory

You may have noticed that our fave YouTube crush Grace Victory hosted the betty Galentine’s Day sleepover this week. It was a stupidly fun event, filled with face masks, pink dressing gowns and so. many. snacks. If you can’t get enough of Grace, check out this interview in Cosmo where she opens up about her mental health struggles. Grace in the face of adversity, much?

Our lips aren’t sealed

The Kylie Jenner pop-up shop in New York opened this week, and people went a little bit mental. Some Kylie superfans started queuing at midday THE DAY BEFORE. By the time the doors opened at 10:30am on Monday, it was snowing and the line snaked up and down the block and around a corner. But as any true Kylie Jenner fan knows, losing feeling in your toes is totally worth it if you can get your hand on her Valentine’s Day drop. Isn’t it? Sure it is.

👑 MY TEAM! Can't BELIEVE the LOVE today!!!!!!!

Extreme onion cutting

There are a million old wives’ tales about how to stop yourself from crying while chopping onions (keep onions in the fridge, don’t chop the root of the onion, put a spoon in your mouth), but 19-year-old Dwi Intan came up with a genius tactic of her own this week: a motorbike helmet. First question: did it work? Amazingly she said it still didn’t completely solve the problem, but points for creativity.

Second question: what the hell recipe requires that many onions, and can we eat it please?

The Everything, Everything trailer is here!

The trailer for Everything, Everything has finally landed and it’s amazing. Based on Nicola Yoon’s book of the same name, Amandla Stenberg plays Madeline Whittier, a 17-year-old girl who’s never been outside because of a disease that would kill her if she left her strictly controlled house. But when Olly moves in next door… oh, we all know where this is going, right? Just watch the trailer.

Hey, which Bey is your bae?

Did you see the pics of Beyoncé at the Grammys? Of course you did. You saw how amazing she looked in her red, sequinned number with her deluxe two-roomed baby bump. But finally, we’re thrilled to announce there’s an answer to the question we’ve all pondered in the wee hours of morning… which era Beyoncé are you? Take our quiz and find out!

Hooray! The week is finally over. It’s been a kinda dreary week but we promise there’s a lot of good news to go around. So now you can get started on all your weekend-y things (aka spending as many hours as humanly possible in your pyjamas) and take a look at all the stuff we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

Beyoncé is preggas

Just in case you somehow missed this PSA, Blue Ivy is about to become a big sister. But what could be better than the news that Beyoncé is pregnant? The news that Beyoncé is pregnant with TWINS. Predictably, the internet went into overdrive; a record 8,868 tweets were sent per second and she’s already racked up 7.5 million likes on Instagram.

Congrats Bey and Jay. Every celebrity take note: this is how you announce a pregnancy. And double kudos to her for doing it in such a sensible bra.

JK Rowling is throwing some serious shade on Twitter

We’ve always known that JK Rowling is not a woman to back down from a fight but this week, she reminded of us why she’s one of the most successful authors of all time. With just 140 characters, she completely shut down some haters on Twitter by being sassy af. Trolls beware.

Lucy Hale has a new TV show

For all the Pretty Little Liars fans who are wondering how they’re going to fill the void in their life once 7B airs, we’re got some good news. Entertainment Weekly announced that Lucy Hale is set to star in a new show called: Life Sentence. Intrigued? So are we. The premise is that Lucy’s character is diagnosed with terminal cancer, so she decides to let loose and really enjoy her remaining days on earth without worrying about the consequences. The twist? Turns out she’s not going to die after all. BOOM.

Hidden Figures is inspiring the kids

The internet’s heart collectively melted when three girls from Milwuakee College Prep decided to dress up this week to go and see Hidden Figures, a film about the black women who worked for NASA during the 60s and have been basically overlooked by history. According to Buzzfeed, 8-year-old Ambrielle Baker-Rogers came up with the idea as part of a school assignment for Black History Month. Girls, we salute both your hair and your commitment levels.

Priceless. #Femthefuture #Hiddenfigures

There’s another Beauty and the Beast Trailer

There’s less that two months until the new live action Beauty and the Beast fills our screens. To keep us going, Disney have released a new trailer and OH. MY. GOD, is it giving us all the feels.

John Mayer’s new songs will make you swoon

John Mayer dropped a new EP this week and we have been listening to it on repeat. Our pick for this weekend is aptly titled ‘Love on the Weekend.’ But if you can’t find love, pancakes will do.

Happy Friday!

Ok, winter you were fun for a while, but it would be really nice if you’d bugger off now so we could all have some time to regain the feeling in our toes.

Here are some of the other things we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

Taylor Swift and Zayn’s song was released

Finally, after weeks of teasing, Swifty and Zayn have released the music video for their brand-new song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.” There’s a lot of brooding looks and coloured lighting, but let’s be real, we’ll probably keep watching it all day.

The boys in your class might be getting more allowance than you

Yep, according to a report by Childwise, on average, boys between the ages of 11 and 16 receive £17.80 allowance a week, compared to girls of the same age, who get £12.50. Not only that, the report found that boys are encouraged to have more financial independence than girls. Ladies, it’s time to get negotiating.

Miss Canada, you’ve got our vote

Siera Bearchell, the woman who represents Canada in the Miss Universe pageant took to Instagram this week to talk about something really important: self-worth. Her message for everyone out there? Stop focusing on who everyone else wants you to be and embrace who you really are. Well, we’re backing Miss Canada for the win.

I was recently asked, "What happened to you? Why have you gained weight? You are losing points" This was a reference to my body of course. While I am first to say I am not as lean as I was when I was 16, 20, or even last year, but I am more confident, capable, wise, humble and passionate than ever before. 🙋🏻As soon as I started to love who I was rather than always trying to fit what I thought society wanted me to be, I gained a whole new side of life. This is the side I am trying to bring to the @missuniverse competition. The side of life that is so rare to find: self-worth and self-love. We always focus on the things we wish we could change rather than loving everything we are. #missuniverse #bodydiversity #IMG

H&M to donate millions to refugees

Over the holiday period, H&M made a pact to donate 5% of proceeds for every gift card that was sold in 4000 of their stores to help refugee children. They’ve dedicated the money to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help them provide education for children who have had to flee their homes. If you want to learn more about the UNHCR, you can read about them here. But in the meantime, we’re watching this adorable video that UNHCR Philippines put together – it’s giving us all the feels.

“I think you’re old like dirt”: Bad Lip Reading

Need something to make you laugh? It’s seven days since President Trump was inaugurated, and it’s been an, er, interesting week. You may have seen the actual inauguration, but have you seen Bad Lip Reading’s version? It’s full of gems like: “the new kid smells like falafel and wants to shave my moustache” and “you think I won’t fling three eggs at you?” We promise it’ll have you in stitches.

Harry Pooper and the Chamber of Secrets

Every so often, JK Rowling answers a question you never even knew you had. This week on Pottermore she revealed that wizards used to…poo themselves. TMI? Maybe. But hey, now we know.

Just look at this actual excerpt from Rowling's entry about the Chamber of Secrets:

The nail polish challenge

This week, Lily and Anjali messed around with the NailsInc nail polish that came in this month’s bettybox to do a nail polish challenge. Let us know who you think won in the comments section!

Have a great weekend, we’ll see you Monday!

Yes, it’s freezing outside and no, the day isn’t quite over but no matter how your day is going, spare a thought for the team of people who will have five hours to move the Obama family out of The White House and the Trumps in. It turns out no detail is too small for this team to care about – even the room temperatures and humidity levels in the house are changed to suit the new family’s preferences (who knew people had humidity preferences?)

Here are some of the other things we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

#WhyIMarch

On Saturday, an estimated 1.3 million women in 616 locations around the world will take to the street for the Women’s March. The aim of the march is basically to send the message to political leaders (*ahem* some newer than others) that women’s rights are human rights too. Or, as its Facebook page explains: “We will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society. We work peacefully while recognising there is no true peace without justice and equity for all.”

If you want to attend a march, visit Women’s March to find the one closest to you – and get your walkin’ shoes on.

Bond, Jane Bond.

Do you always hesitate when people ask what you be when you grow up? Well, we’ve got your back. GCHQ’s (that’s the Government Communications Head Quarters) new National Cyber Security Centre has invited teenage girls to enter a competition that could reveal the cyber spies of the future. And yes, it’s exactly as cool as it sounds.

Teams of four girls aged 13-15 can enter the CyberFirst Girls competition, where they’ll have to complete a series of online challenges. The top 10 teams will progress to a national final in London in March. Plus, the winning team will all take home individual prizes and their school will receive £1000 of IT equipment.

We imagine it will be exactly like Spy Kids, but, you know, set in 2017.

Can’t sleep? It might be Instagram’s fault.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with a sinking feeling in your stomach that no one will like your latest Instagram? Well, you’re not alone. According the Science of Us, a new study was released that found a fifth (or 20%) of teens regularly wake up at night to check their social media. The study showed that those who woke up in the middle of the night for a sneaky Snapchat session were THREE times more likely to say that they constantly felt tired at school, and were less happy than their better-rested peers. So if you’re reading this after 11pm, go back to bed! Like, now.

How to be flawless in one easy step

Anyone who’s ever taken a selfie knows it’s all about the angles… but fitness model Anna Victoria stepped it up a notch when she posted this image on her Instagram this week, to show how misleading social media can really be. While Anna looks ridiculously 🔥 in both pics, she wanted to send a message to her fans about body image: “I will not punish my body I will fuel it I will challenge it AND I will love it,” she says. Flawed? More like floored.

Me 1% of the time vs. 99% of the time. And I love both photos equally. Good or bad angles don't change your worth ❤️ I recently came across an article talking about how one woman stated she refuses to accept her flaws, because she doesn't see them as flaws at all. I LOVED that because it sends such a powerful message that our belly rolls, cellulite, stretch marks are nothing to apologize for, to be ashamed of, or to be obsessed with getting rid of! As I'm getting older, I have cellulite and stretch marks that aren't going away, and I welcome them. They represent a life fully lived (for 28 years so far :)) and a healthy life and body at that. How can I be mad at my body for perfectly normal "flaws"? This body is strong, can run miles, can lift and squat and push and pull weight around, and it's happy not just because of how it looks, but because of how it feels. So when you approach your journey, I want you to remember these things: I will not punish my body I will fuel it I will challenge it AND I will love it 💗💗💗 If you're following my page, you're a part of helping me spread this message and creating this movement – thank you. #fbggirls #realstagram www.annavictoria.com/guides

Royally good news! Prince William gets serious about mental health

This week, Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry appeared at a Heads Together event to urge people to talk about their mental health. Prince William encouraged people to not ‘keep quiet and carry on’ but to open up to a friend or family member about any mental health challenges they may be facing. Good work, Will.

If you’re worried about your mental health, visit Childline for more information.

In need of some LOLs?

If you haven’t already watched Raised by Wolves, you should really get on that asap. Written by hilairo author and all-round Shero Caitlin Moran and her sister Caz, the show is based loosely on their own childhood growing up home-schooled in Wolverhampton. Despite the show finishing mid last year, Buzzfeed reminded us of its awesomeness with this week’s round-up of their fave moments – and the main character, Germaine, is just as fist-bitingly hysterical we remembered.

One of the biggest mysteries of all time has finally been solved

No, not how they built Stonehenge. The other big mystery: are all the Pixar films related somehow? Well, there’s some good news for all the animation-lovers out there – Disney has finally given us an answer. Get ready to have your mind blown.

IT’S FINALLY SNOWING and we couldn’t be more excited. There’s something magical about snow that makes everyone immediately revert to their five-year-old self; catching snowflakes on your tongue, building snowmen with carrots for noses, belting out all the songs from Frozen as you hurtle down the nearest hill on a bin bag (oh, just us?).

So while the flakes fall outside, settle in with a hot chocolate and read about some of the other things we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

The Emma Watson doll looks like… Justin Bieber

The internet collectively lost its mind this week when Disney released a Belle doll ahead of the release of the new live action Beauty and the Beast film (eeeeeek). There is one slight snag though. The Emma Watson-inspired doll looks… weirdly like Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber wearing a wig and a big yellow dress.

Biebs, sorry to break it to you, but we’re not sure canary yellow is your colour. Even our mama agrees.

Parliament votes against compulsory sex ed

Despite three quarters of young people believing that sex and relationships education (SRE) should be taught in schools, parliament has voted against the legislation. SRE aims to give students a more well-rounded education about sex and relationships. Rather than just learning all the birds and the bees lark, SRE would provide information about consent, LGBT+ relationships and the emotional side of sexual relationships too – because we all know that stuff is just as important as *what* supposedly goes *where*.

If you want to get involved in the campaign, you can check it out here. Or watch our video with our Shero Laura Bates, founder of Everyday Sexism about her involvement in the SRE campaign.

iPhone turned 10 this week

A whole decade ago today, we welcomed the very first iPhone into the world. It weighed 135 grams, had a glossy black finish and changed the way we communicate forever. Happy birthday, dear iPhone! We couldn’t work out what to get you – after all, what do you get the phone that has everything? So we settled on a gif of a grumpy cat at a birthday party. Nailed it.

Sasha Obama must have had some serious FOMO on Tuesday

It always sucks when your parents say you can’t go to the cinemas with your friends because you have to study. But the Obamas took it to a whole new level this week when they said Sasha couldn’t come to watch President Obama’s farewell speech because she had an exam the next day.

Yep, while her mum and sister were sitting front row, proudly beaming as her father bid farewell to millions of people, Sasha was at home with her textbooks. No matter how she does in the exam, we’re giving her an A+ for effort.

Aubrey Plaza is on Instagram & Chris Pratt is excited

Parks and Recreation star and all-round comedy queen Aubrey Plaza has finally joined Instagram, and her TV husband Chris Pratt is pretty excited. He posted this adorable throwback of the two of them from their Parks and Rec days with the caption: “Please follow my TV wife @plazadeaubrey Aubrey Plaza AKA Janet Snakehole. You heard the man – go follow! You can’t say no to Star-Lord.

Oreo Cadbury Creme eggs are a thing now

It’s still the early days of January, so obviously supermarkets are already stocking Easter eggs. All the old regulars will be there; the giant one filled with Smarties, the Lindt ones with the soft centre and, of course, the egg that needs no introduction: the Creme egg. Only this year, Cadbury is stepping it up a notch (ok, blowing all our minds) with the Oreo Creme Egg. We’ve got three months to get used to the idea… but all the delicious sugariness of a regular Creme egg mixed with Oreos? We’re egg-cited.

Laura Marling’s voice will keep you warm this winter

Laura Marling has released a new single and we are in LOVE. It’s the perfect track for sitting near the window and watching the snow fall outside while cradling a hot beverage, maybe with a fire flickering gently in the background. And a cat gently purring on our lap. Not that we’ve thought about this or anything.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

The Netflix adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is out today, and there’s nothing unfortunate about that! After all, you’ll need some consolation when the snow melts.

Have a great weekend y’all!

It’s time you started celebrating your period, guys. Sign up to bettybox RN and get all your tampons and pads, beauty products, sweet treats and loads more cool stuff delivered to your door, every single month. We know. It’s totally awesome.

Well hey there, January! After a nice Christmas break where we ate our body weight in turkey and Lindor, we’re back and we’ve got a lot of exciting things brewing for 2017. Watch this space.

And in the meantime, here are some of the other things we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

New Year, Same You

This January, we’re saying boo to the usual ‘New Year, New You’ nonsense and saying ‘New Year, Same You‘ instead. It’s all about celebrating yourself – the actual you, not the Instagrammable, perfect fantasy version – and spending time on stuff you really love, instead of the stuff you think you ought to be into. This month’s going to be about celebrating your inner nerd, re-inventing your existing wardrobe, and doing exactly what’s right for you – plus all our usual tips and funny tales from the coolest girls we know. Excited? We are too.

new year same you

Petition for Carrie Fisher to be one of the Disney Princesses

Sometimes humans are really, really amazing. Following the tragic death of Carrie Fisher last week, one fan stumbled upon the brilliant idea to promote her character Princess Leia to Disney Princess stardom. It’s a controversial move as she would be the only non-animated Disney princess, but the online petition on Change.org already has over 25,000 signatures and we think makes a pretty good case.

“After the tragic lose of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess. This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney’s new properties that is beloved by millions.

“What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher.”

Petitioners, may the force be with you.

The best of Obama, 2016

With only a few weeks left of Barack Obama’s presidency, Obama nostalgia is in full swing (and to be honest it’s in the running to be our new favourite hobby for 2017). The official White House photographer Pete Souza released his fave photos of the President from 2016 and they’re exactly as adorable as we all hoped they would be. You can check out the entire collection on Medium here. Never leave us, Barry-O.

Ellen DeGeneres took a stand

Ellen Degeneres has banned gospel singer Kim Burrell from appearing on her show this week after she made homophobic comments. In a church sermon in Texas, Burrell referred to “the perverted homosexual spirit”. Then, in a video published after the sermon, she said she made “no excuses or apologies” for her comments. The singer was due to appear with Pharrell Williams on The Ellen Degeneres Show, but presenter Degeneres, a gay woman and tireless ambassador for LGBT+ rights, took back the invite. We’re with you Ellen.

Urban Outfitters has crowned the Class of 2017

Urban Outfitters has kicked off the year with a new campaign, The Class of 2017. The special collab with US brands Hanes and Champion features 16 influencers, a diverse mix of cool faces and personalities – including body positive activist Barbie Ferreira and transgender model Hari Nef – who are aiming to change the way we look at the world this year.

Face it, magic is real

Storybook cosmetics is a book nerd’s (ahem, the entire betty team’s) dream come true, selling make up and beauty tools that take inspiration from some of the most popular books of all time. Harry Potter? Yep. Game of Thrones? Obvs. Romeo and Juliet? Why not. The product we’re probably most excited about is the quill and pot eyeliner set that they’re launching later this year – LOOK AT IT.storybook

In the meantime, follow them on Instagram to keep up to date with their plans. Accio, nerd beauty.

Have a magical weekend everyone! We’ll see you Monday.

Christmas is just around the corner and 2016 is almost over, so to quote our brilliant editor, Lauren: “It’s time to start winding down… or ramping up, or… something!” Now that school’s (hopefully) out for this year, you have plenty of time to catch up on all things betty and watch Christmas films to your heart’s content.

In the meantime, here are some of the things we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week. Enjoy.

What’s in our search history?

Google has put together a video of the most searched events of this year and we’re not going to lie, it’s really freakin’ beautiful. We would suggest having tissues close by for this one – as it’s been a hell of a year and this is a hell of a video to match. Google’s take away message? Love is out there.

Let’s be YouTube stars, shall we?

There’s a point in everyone’s lives where they’ve thought, “Sod it, why don’t I just quit school and become a YouTuber?”. Well the idea just got a whole lot more tempting, as this week Forbes released a list of the world’s highest paid YouTubers. For the second year running, PewDiePie topped the list, making a whopping $15 million (£12M).

New business plan: check if the handle ‘PewDiPi’ is taken.

Pretty Little Liars will live on

The final series of Pretty Little Liars is hitting our screens next year, but there is a silver lining. PLL and PocketGem have announced that they’re going to be releasing an interactive app, so you never have to really leave Rosewood. According to Variety, the app will let fans follow their fave characters with a brand-new storyline set way back in the first season of the show. The choices you make will change how the plot unfolds, so this time it’s you – rather than A – who’s pulling the strings. Zomg.

Felicity Jones would rather play male roles

The latest instalment in the Star Wars franchise hits the big screen today (finally!), with your new imaginary best friend Felicity Jones in the lead role. Felicity told Female First this week that she would often rather play male characters, because the roles are more interesting – but luckily she’s plenty happy with her Star Wars alter-ego. “Jyn is a fantastic woman,” she says. “I saw her as being tough and decisive and I tried to capture that attitude and portray her as an extraordinary heroine. We rarely see a woman like this in film.

Here’s to seeing more kickass women on the big screen!

These amazing girls blew the whistle on the FA

Some girls in County Durham properly kicked off this week when they were handed the Football Association’s plan to get more girls involved in the sport. Some of the FA’s suggestions included: allowing girls to take breaks to check their phones and tweet, providing “colourful bibs that smell nice”, using a smaller ball to avoid the fear of being hit by a heavy one, and, the biggest stroke of brilliance – using pink whistles.

In response, girls from Lumley Junior School in County Durham wrote letters to the FA, including one from 10-year-old Ruby that said: “We aren’t brainless Barbie dolls. We don’t all like the same colour (pink). We are not fussy about colour or the smell of our bibs – would you be? And we are not afraid to get hit by a ball, so why would we need light ones; in case we break a nail?”

Mike drop.

Look how cute!

Christmas is coming, so it’s time to dust off your glue guns and glitter. In typical betty style, we weren’t just about to make any old Christmas decorations. Why would we do that when we could make TAMPON ANGELS? Look out for our tutorial explaining how to make these celestial beauties on our YouTube channel.

Flying high

And why stop at a tampon angel when you could have a whole tree loaded with feminist baubles? We love this one of the Queen of the aviation world, Amelia Earhart. Fly, pretties!

See, 2016 wasn’t a complete disaster

Sure, there’ve been plenty of times that 2016 has got us down – but Buzzfeed has rounded up 33 good things that happened in 2016 and it made us smile and cry simultaneously. For about 20 minutes. Spoiler: includes love, puppies and a kid licking a dolphin.

Enjoy!

Oh hey there! Have you noticed something different about us lately? Like maybe our BRAND NEW WEBSITE?! Isn’t it pret-ty?

Don’t worry, we haven’t just spent the week looking at our shiny new website and stroking the screen. Here are some of the other things we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

Youtube Rewind

Alfie Deyes, Fleur De Force (hey, we met her!) and Casper Lee are among the 200 YouTubers from 18 countries that participated in this year’s YouTube Rewind. The video includes the biggest viral trends of 2016 – from the mannequin challenge, to the water bottle flip – and, of course, the 100 layers challenge. 2016 has truly been a bizarre year…

The Clothes Show 2016

This week, the betty team boarded the betty bus and headed to The Clothes Show. You can read about everything we got up to hereOr you can watch our vlog. Or do both. Totally your call.

Giraffes may face extinction

It turns out the literal giants of the animal kingdom that roam southern and eastern Africa are now classed as vulnerable on the latest global Red List of Threatened Species. It’s thought they’re being pushed towards a “silent” extinction because of illegal hunting (weep) and habitat loss, with their numbers falling 40% in the last 30 years.

13-year-old invents bandage that helps wounds heal faster

Anushka Naiknaware has developed a bandage that senses the moisture in a wound dressing (which tbh, sounds super complicated and involves something called nanoparticles). Her bandage allows doctors to monitor the moisture in the wound without even having to unwrap the dressing. It’s a huge break through because the healthier the moisture range, the faster a wound heals.

Her idea won her the Lego Education Builder Award at the 2016 Google Science Fair. Which, totally NBD, comes with $15,000, a trip to Denmark, and a one-year mentorship with Lego to help get the project into production. What a boss.

So…Space Poop is a thing

If there are any budding scientists out there who are a bit miffed that Anushka beat them to the Lego Education Builder Award, fear not because you don’t always have to be number two (lol). No, but for reals, NASA is holding a competition to solve one of life’s greatest mysteries: how to do a poo in zero gravity. Currently astronauts diaper up, but NASA thinks there’s gotta be a better system out there. If you’ve got any ideas, dump ’em here.

The Queen is hiring

You might want to brush up your CV because the Queen is looking for some interns. That’s right, when Prince Harry was on his two-week royal tour of the Caribbean (sigh), he announced that his Grandma would be offering up nine new scholarships to young professionals seeking to improve their hospitality skills. The slight snag? You have to be a resident of one of the Queen’s realms of the Caribbean, which, we’ve gotta admit sounds a little Game of Thrones-y, even for Her Majesty.

Greek philosopher schools us in the art of rejection

The Greek philosopher and mathematician, Hypatia, came up with the most incredible way possible to ward off one of her male suitors… she threw her sanitary pads at him. Maybe we’ll try this next time.

It’s Friday, which means that school is almost done for another week and a weekend full of hot chocolates, duvet hibernation and watching cute cat videos on YouTube awaits.

But to keep you going in the meantime, here’s our weekly round-up of everything we’ve been reading, watching and loving this week.

Give these women a medal! Oh, they did.

President Obama awarded 21 Medals of Freedom this week. The medals are a BIG DEAL, basically the American equivalent of being knighted. One of the people to receive a medal was Margaret Hamilton, the lead software developer for the 1969 NASA Apollo lunar modules and command modules. You’re looking at the lady who put astronauts on the moon, at a time when most women were still expected to be housewives.

Margaret, we salute you and your kick ass-ery.

Another very special lady received a Medal of Freedom this week: the hilarious all-dancing LGBT ambassador Ellen Degeneres. As the President noted, because of Ellen’s extraordinary success it’s easy to forget the enormous risks she’s taken – coming out as a lesbian in 1997, her career suffered and the show she was starring in was cancelled. But thanks to role models like her, LGBT rights have come on a long way in the last 20 years and nothing will warm your heart like watching a tearful Obama embrace a tearful Ellen. You guys.

Read, steady, SHOP!

It’s Black Friday, which means that there are sale everywhere. Topshop, Boots, New Look and ASOS are among the brands that will be taking part. The Guardian has rounded up of the best sales going, in case you want to get a jump start on your Christmas shopping…. or your ‘I really deserve a new jumper’ shopping.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Gilmore Girls is BACK!

After month of waiting, it’s finally here! The Gilmore Girls reunion is on Netflix now. Today. It’s right there waiting for you, shiny and new as Emily’s soup tureen.

And if you haven’t managed to watch all seven seasons, don’t worry, we’ve put together a cheat sheet with all the key characters and plot points. What are you waiting for? Altogether now! “If you’re out on the roooad… feeling lonesome and so cooold…”.

This week we met Jennifer Niven, New York Times Bestselling author of All The Bright Places – which bagged a spot in Zoella’s bookclub and is now being made into a movie starring Elle Fanning as the main character, Violet. She’s now back with a new book called, Holding Up The Universe, which she told us all about when she came to visit our new betty studio. And she was delightful. We heart you, Jennifer.

Keep your eyes peeled for the interview!
